CV Advice - Graduates

Your CV is extremely important, and without a good CV you will not be able to get an interview, let alone the ‘dream’ job you might be applying for.

Although there are some fantastic positions available, competition is extremely tough … especially for recent graduates. Tens of thousands graduate each year, so you have to have an impressive CV to get that initial ‘foot in the door’.

The Designer Forum are sent hundreds of CVs a year, and only approximately 2-3% of these CVs have a great layout that is eye-catching, yet easy to read. Most CVs also miss off key information and are not geared towards the job they are applying for.

We have therefore put together a few basic pointers to get you started ...

Initial Tips & Ideas for Creating Your CV

• Make sure that all the information is correct (with no spelling mistakes), it looks good, and is relevant to the position you are applying to.

• As a rule do not use computer CV packages.

• CV’s should be easy to email & photocopier friendly!

• We work in a creative industry, so your CV should have a carefully designed layout, especially if you are wanting a design position, but also for buying, styling, marketing, etc.

• This means creating a CV style which you can continue through into your covering letter and/or emails. This doesn't need to be fancy; it can be as simple as creating your own ‘letterhead’ or the font size & colour used for headers.

• Choose your font carefully - remember you want to reflect you are an innovative & forward thinking individual and 'Times New Roman' doesn't convey that message!

• Remember you are selling yourself in a similar way to a brand or product, so try & think of 3-6 skills or qualities that make you stand out from the rest – your ‘unique selling point’ (usp) or key differentials.

• Make sure you highlight any CAD skills or actual CAD packages that you have worked on, as this can be a real door opener.

Hopefully these tips have got you started, however make sure you also download our informative CV helpsheet that has lots more ideas on layout & content.
